This report makes links between promoting and supporting positive behaviour in primary schools through the development of SEAL. It was published in 2009, Ref: 00153-2009FLY-EN.

Primary SEAL family materials to accompany curriculum work in Theme 1, New Beginnings (for Wales: English Medium). The gold set provides a set of activities for families to do at together at home when undertaking Theme 1. Note that there are Welsh medium versions of this booklet. The Purple sets provide ideas for use by staff (for example, in staff meetings or on in-service training days). They are designed to be fun, to encourage learning and reflection, and to support the building of an adult community that is based on trust, support and fairness. For Wales, English medium.

This Silver set provides an early intervention for children who need additional support in developing their social, emotional and behavioural skills. It is aimed at children in Years 1 and 2 and links to the Blue set. The ideas in the materials could also be adapted, however, to provide group work for children in Year 3 and in the Foundation Stage.

This theme focuses on developing children’s knowledge, understanding and skills in four key social and emotional aspects of learning: empathy, self-awareness, social skills and motivation.

The theme offers children the opportunity to see themselves as valued individuals within a community, and to contribute to shaping a welcoming, safe and fair learning community for all. Throughout the theme children explore feelings of happiness and excitement, sadness, anxiety and fearfulness, while learning (and putting into practice) shared models for ‘calming down’ and ‘problem solving’.

The Saying no to bullying theme is structured differently from the other themes. It is intended that the work takes place over the period of a week or so, and that work in each subject area is focused on the aims of the theme as well as on subject-related objectives. Many schools have chosen to use the theme-related work to coincide with the national antibullying week in November.

This theme aims to develop and revisit four of the key social and emotional aspects of learning covered in previous themes, through a focus on bullying – what it is; how it feels; why people bully; how we can prevent and respond to it; and how children can use their social, emotional and behavioural skills to tackle this crucial
problem. The four aspects of learning in which knowledge, skills and understanding are developed are self-awareness, empathy, managing feelings and social skills.
